Animal Crossing Neighbourhood Activities
Fishing, gardening, bug-hunting – there is always something fun to do in Animal Crossing. Here are a few helpful tips to get you started.
As Time Goes By
Time stops for no one in Animal Crossing. Many important events occur only at certain hours of the day or on certain days of the year. Even the type of wildlife you encounter depends on the season or the time of day. Check in every day to make sure you don’t miss anything.
The Difference is Night and Day
Day – Daytime is busy-time for your town. Neighbours are out and about, and the majority of activities and events take place during the day, just like in real life.
Night – As the sun sets, businesses will close, and most town-folk will go to sleep. If you go for an evening stroll, you might run into the occasional night owl.
The Seasons of the Year
Spring – Spring is a vibrant time when vegetation comes to life, and you may even spot an occasional rainbow. Don’t miss the Flower Fest, where you can win special prizes.
Summer – Summer means lots of sunshine and lots of bugs! The Bug-Off competitions take place during this time of the year, and fireworks shows will be held as well.
Autumn – Leaves start to change colour and float from the trees during Autumn. It is also time for the annual Acorn Festival, where you can trade in acorns for rare furniture.
Winter – As the year winds down, your town becomes a winter wonderland. Make snowmen and enjoy the Bright Nights, when neighbours decorate their houses.
The Basics of Fishing
There is nothing like a day of fishing. Of course, it is not much fun if you cannot catch any fish! After you purchase a fishing rod from Tom Nook, take some time to practice casting your line – it is harder than it seems. If you are lucky enough to catch a fish, you can sell it to Tom Nook or donate it to the museum. There are dozens of types of fish, depending on the season.
How and Where to Cast
To have success fishing, you have got to go where the fish are. When you see a shadow in a river or lake, approach the water slowly and cast your line using the touch screen or the A button. If there is a current, be sure to cast upstream so your bait and lure travel toward the fish, not away from them.
When and How to Reel Them In
Timing is crucial – if you are overanxious and tug the line out early, you will miss the fish, but if you wait too long, the fish will swim away with your bait. Notice when your lure bobs underwater. Once the fish has taken the bait, hold the A button or press and hold the touch screen continually until the fish is caught.
Favourite Fishing Spots
Waterfall
The river that runs through your town starts at the scenic waterfall. It is the only place to catch the large char.
Main Pond
The river will create a pond in your town. The fish there include catfish, giant snakeheads and pond smelt.
Holding Pond
The holding pond is a small, enclosed pool in town. You can find killifish, crawfish and frogs there.
River
The river runs straight through the middle of your town. It is home to many types of fish, including carp, angelfish and rainbow trout.
River’s Mouth
The river’s mouth is at the end of your town’s river, which is located in a random area in each game. You can catch salmon and king salmon there.
Ocean
Many strange and beautiful types of fish live in the ocean, such as the coelacanth, jellyfish and barred knifejaw.
