What will your world look like?
One of the first and most important steps to take when brainstorming your game idea is to think about how it fits into a bigger world. By world, we don’t just mean the planet we live on, but world in the sense of a whole setting.
For example, Star Wars, Harry Potter and Pokemon are all different worlds that you probably know something about. The creators of those things did a ton of world building to help them come alive. They made up different locations in their universe, a bunch of characters and their families, and backstories that are fun to learn about.
Your simple Roblox game probably isn’t going to become the next Harry Potter or anything like that, but if you want it to be as good as it can be, then you should try to make it a really cool world.
Designing a world
Whether you think you might make one giant game in Roblox or a group of smaller ones, you should consider how everything ties together. The most important part of building a world as a game creator is to approach it like you would if you were a player. Does your world have an overall theme, like a medieval kingdom or a planet in outer space? What would you think was fun and interesting? What would make you want to keep playing? It can be hard to remember all of the details you are thinking up in your head, so you might want to write it all down. You can even draw out what parts of your world might look like on paper.
First impressions
Spend some time imagining exactly what your players will see first when they start a game. Those first moments can shape how they view your entire game.
When you are coming up with the world that your game takes place in, think about:
- What kind of planet is this on? What is the terrain like?
- What are the people like who live there?
- What do they do all day?
When you make a really well-thought-out world, you can even make different types of games about that one world. For example, you could set a racing game, an Obby, and an action game all in that same world.
World size
You can imagine your world size in two different ways:
- You can get one small idea and build something bigger from it.
- You can think of a big world right from the beginning and then fill in the details as you go.
The best part of all this is that there is no right or wrong way to make your world – it is yours, after all!
Reusing materials to make things easier
One of the most important things you can do as a game designer is to find ways to make your life easier. For example…
- Don’t redo work that doesn’t need to be done again – use Copy and Paste whenever you can.
- Try to avoid wasting time on unimportant things, like stressing out about what colour something should be, before you even have it working inside the game.
For example, if you spend all afternoon making a brand-new house model for a city in a game you are making, don’t start from scratch when you make the next house model. Take the existing house and adjust the layout, colours and materials to make it fresh and unique without having to spend too much time.
