Some of Minecraft’s mobs can be made friendly, or even fully tamed. Here is how to make them help you – or at least stop them getting in your way!
Horses, Donkeys and Mules
Taming a horse, as well as donkeys and mules, can be done easily. First, you have to befriend it by approaching with an empty hand and getting on its back. Initially, it will probably just throw you off. Repeat this enough times, though, and hearts will appear above its head, indicating that it accepts you as a rider. Now, you can open the inventory while riding it and equip a saddle or some armour. Riding horses lets you move a lot quicker even than sprinting and can allow you to carry extra goods. If you have a donkey or mule, you can equip it with saddlebags by using a chest on it.
Parrots
To tame parrots, simply feed them seeds – melon, pumpkin, wheat and beetroot seeds all count. There is a one in three chance of the seeds taming the parrot, at which point it will fly behind you and ride on your shoulder if you stop walking. You can also tell tame parrots to perch by clicking on them. There is no real benefit to doing this, but it is fun to have your own flock. Just make sure you don’t feed them cookies, as they can eat them, but chocolate is poisonous to parrots.
Dolphins
You can’t permanently tame dolphins, but if you feed them raw cod, they will lead you to nearby shipwrecks or underwater ruins which contain chests, allowing you to collect the loot inside. If you break the chest, they will lead you to the next closest intact one.
Axolotls
The newest tameable mob is coming to the game in the 1.17 update, which is any time now. Taming an axolotl is one of the simplest ways of taming any mob in Minecraft, because all you have to do is catch it in a bucket. Once tamed, it will swim alongside you when you are underwater, fending off drowned guardians and attacking fish. They can also remove Mining Fatigue, making them an essential companion for ocean monument exploration.
Wolves
Wolves only spawn in forest and taiga biomes. They can be made into tame dogs by feeding them bones. Once tamed, the wolf will wear a collar, which can by dyed, and becomes breedable – their puppies will also be tame. Tamed wolves are useful because they will attack any mob that attacks you, and when they kill the mob, it will still drop experience and its normal items.
Foxes
Wild foxes cannot be tamed, but you can breed a friendly fox. Feed two adults sweet berries to put them into breeding mode, and the baby fox that is born will trust you. Foxes that trust you will attack hostile mobs and not run away if you approach them.
Llamas
You can tame a llama in exactly the same way you can tame a horse. Once you have tamed one, they can be equipped with a chest to carry items. You can also optionally equip them with a piece of carpet tile as decoration, with each colour of carpet showing a different design. Although you can ride a tamed llama, it is impossible to control its direction. You can, however, attach a lead to them and lead them around on it. If you do this, they will form trains of up to 10 llamas so you can transport a huge number of llamas. The number of items a llama can carry depends on a hidden strength value but will always be between three and 15 inventory slots. If tamed, they will spit at wolves or any other mobs that attack the player.
